The Stirling Single class of locomotives were built by the Great Northern Railway at Doncaster between 1870 and 1895 and numbered fifty-three locomotives in total and were noted for their very distinctive 8 foot 1 inch driving wheels and turn of speed.
In the early part of the twentieth century the Class was withdrawn, however in 1907 Stirling Single No.1 was set aside for preservation. Shortly after preservation the locomotive was paired with a smaller Sturrock tender obtained from an earlier locomotive and it was with this tender that the locomotive is perhaps best known as the ‘wrong’ tender remained with GNR No.1 for nearly all of its time in preservation.
As time progressed an original, correct, Stirling Single tender was located derelict near Peterborough and was being used for as a water and sludge carrier! This tender was paired with No. 1 in 2014.
