Electric locomotive, British Railways, Class 71 Bo-Bo, third rail 750V dc pick-up and overhead, No E5001, built at Doncaster in 1958, withdrawn in 1977.

As part of British Rail's Modernisation Plan of 1955 24 electric locomotives were built in 1958 for the Southern Region of the rail network. The main lines across Kent were being electrified and the manufacture of these electric locomotives was timed in connection with the electrification project.

Originally numbered E5001 to E5024, under the later TOPS system the locomotives became British Rail Class 71 and were re-numbered accordingly. The Class 71s were mix-traffic locomotives, hauling freight services but also being used for the Southern Region's famous Night Ferry and Golden Arrow passenger trains.

E5001 is currently undergoing cosmetic restoration to museum standards at Locomotion in Shildon before going back on display soon.
