British Railways Class 02 No.D2860 - DCC Ready

The British Rail 02 Class was a fleet of 20 diesel-hydraulic locomotives built by the Yorkshire Engine Company of Sheffield between 1960 and 1961. These engines, which had a maximum speed of 30mph, were built specifically for service in restricted loading gauge and curvatures. Their 6ft wheels made them ideal for navigating curves with radiuses as narrow as 60ft.

The initial delivery of these locomotives was to Bank Hall Shed in Liverpool, and most were allocated to depots around Liverpool and Manchester. Following changes to the role of the British railway system and the closure of several of the depots where the 02s were in service, they increasingly became redundant, and withdrawal of the engines began in December 1969. By 1971, only four of the 02s remained in service with British Rail, but even these were then removed in June 1975.

Following withdrawal, the fleet of 02s were still in good working condition and eleven were sold to private industry and the remaining nine scrapped. A few years later, No.D2860 was purchased by the National Railway Museum and was used for shunting duties at the museum. After transfer in 2026, the locomotive can now be seen performing those duties at Locomotion.
