GNR J52 / J13 No.1247 - SOUND FITTED

New from Rapido, the LNER J52/2 0-6-0 is now available in our Exclusive 'As Preserved' livery. This neat little shunter was seen the length and breadth of the GNR network, from North London to the Northeast of England and the J52/2 model has been designed using works drawings and collaboration from our team to ensure its accuracy. Modellers can look forward to a smooth-running mechanism, a factory-installed speaker, and a warming firebox glow. The model will accurately portray the physical and cosmetic condition of the locomotive as seen in the National Collection today which has changes to the version offered in the main Rapido range.

The Great Northern Railway (GNR) J13 Class was designed by Henry A Ivatt and built by Sharp Stewart & Co in 1899. No.1247 served with the GNR until coming under the control of the LNER after the merging of the railway companies to become the big four. Under LNER Ownership, the class had its designation changed to J52. No.1247 spent most of its working life at Doncaster, only seeing a brief operational stint at Kings Cross under BR control before its withdrawal in 1959.

Upon withdrawal, it was the first locomotive to be purchased directly from BR when it was purchased by Captain W G Smith in 1959 who had wanted to own an Ivatt designed engine. The then numbered No.68846 was repainted in GNR green livery and renumbered back to No.1247. After several rail tours and operational periods on heritage railway lines, and as the owner and the engine grew older, W G Smith decided to donate it to the National Railway Museum in 1980. In recognition, W G Smith was made the first Honorary Life Member of the Friends of the National Railway Museum.

At least for some time during the 1990's No.1247 was fitted with a bell atop its saddle tank. No.1247 is part of the National Collection and is currently housed in Station Hall at the National Railway Museum in York. It is the only preserved example of the class.
