Class 60 No.60098 'Charles Francis Brush' - DCC Ready

The Cavalex Class 60 has been designed completely from scratch, based on original works drawings from Wabtec and an extensive survey of multiple locomotives at Toton. They have incorporated numerous innovations into the model which we’re looking forward to showcasing in our Exclusive Railway Icons model - No.60098 'Charles Francis Brush'.

The Class 60 is a class of Co-Co diesel-electric locomotives built by Brush Traction for heavy freight duties, often nicknamed Tugs by rail enthusiasts. In the 1980s, it became more and more apparent that British Rail (BR) required a more capable locomotive for its heavy freight trains. Dissatisfaction with the British Rail Class 56's reliability led to the stipulation of a 95 per cent availability, a strict requirement at the time. A total of three bids were received to a competitive tender issued in 1987 and of these, Brush Traction's submission was selected and an order for 100 locomotives was issued during the following year. Operating during British Rail's final years, the entire Class 60 fleet became the property of English Welsh & Scottish (EWS) following the privatisation of British Rail in the mid-1990s. While the company was reportedly unimpressed by the type's performance, some were retained for heavy freight duties while much of the fleet was stored and subsequently sold on to other operators.

However, in November 2010, EWS's successor, DB Schenker, announced that a portion of the fleet would be overhauled, referring to such units as Super 60s and extending their service life through to around 2025. Not all Class 60s received such overhauls however, and in 2020, a Class 60 became the first example of the type to be scrapped, while another became the first to be preserved. While the Class 60 can still be seen operating at the time of writing, it is in fewer and fewer numbers now, as newer classes begin to enter service.
